Watched: The King and I

This is a film whose cultural and political tone/message has not aged well. There is a lot of imperialism, although the film overtly addresses that as a threat to Thailand [Siam] However, a lot of the performances are still good and surprisingly nuanced. The soundtrack is classic, there is a lot that it feels the film assumes is fine in the way Anna interacts with the people around her. Her son is barely a character in this. But Yul Brynner is still totally magnetic. Also I covet his entire wardrobe.

Watched: Far from the Madding Crowd

A very condensed but still enjoy adaptation of a classic English novel (which I happened to be reading at the time of watching). I admit the casting was a little bit different than I imagined and I was sad that the ridiculous farmhand interactions got left out because I was surprised how funny I found parts of what is supposed to be a fairly tragic story. But overall I think the three suitors are well cast and the whole thing is still a well-done costume drama.
