Watched: The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

Nonsensical plot, garbled writing, Val Kilmer at peak vain actor jerkhood, David Thewlis playing a weak-willed and barely tolerable hero, Marlon Brando being an insane, muumuu-clad nightmare (on-screen and off), and a supporting cast buried in disgustingly thick makeup to make them look like human-animal hybrids. It's hard to watch, both because of technical decisions, and because of the human element of watching a total trainwreck. It's glorious. It's hideous. It's neither the Island of Dr. Moreau we need nor deserve, but like the hybrid creatures the titular character is so proud of, it's the product we are stuck with.

I highly recommend the rifftrax that accompanies the movie and once you finish, give the How Did this Get made podcast episode for this movie a listen. Together they go a long way in redeeming and explaining what the hell this monstrosity even is.

This is Ron Perlman.

Watched: High School Musical

This is a terrible movie and it is just barely made palatable with Rifftrax.

Busby Berkeley is rolling in his grave.

Bowler hats... all the rage in 2006, perhaps.

Watched: Dear White People

A really interesting first film, full of funny/painful moments and a lot of first film-y moments (so many slo-mo introductions, interstitial titles, and playing with diegesis!) It's self aware and at time almost overly-stylized but still has a lot of great character moments and a fluidity that I really appreciated.
