Watched: Centurion

The lost 9th Legion? Oh yeah, the lost 9th legion. Can't get enough of that damn lost legion. No seriously, Wikipedia has an entire section of the Ninth Legion page devoted to movies and books based on their unexplained disappearance in Britain and it is essentially my bucket list. Why are they so interesting? The idea that they were chasing after their gold standard and got lost too far in northern Pict territory is kind of cool. The early Briton thing is always appealing to me. I like stories about Rome's average citizens (I have a harder time with stuff about the emperors and politicians, yawn). Plus, have you seen The Eagle? It's so extraordinarily overwrought and ridiculous yet perfect and CHANNING TATUM plays a hardened Roman soldier and Jamie Bell plays his maybe-treacherous indentured servant. It's great, highly recommend. This movie, on the other hand, unless you are a fan of any one of the things I mentioned above or of the inestimable acting power of the one and only Mr. Michael Fassbender, there is no reason to watch this. I watched it both for the Ninth and for the Fassbender and was not disappointed by either, but I think normal viewers might find it takes itself way too seriously to be any actual fun but is way too bad to be any actual good.

That said, it does have Dominic West having a good time, Fassbender being an angel sent to us from Handsome Actor Heaven, and Olga Kurylenko (always the sign of a good film when she's involved.) playing a mute warrior huntress lady. Basically, it is not very good or very fun but it is very violent and kind of half-assed in its plotting and pacing and most of it looks like a heavy metal video but I have watched it about half a dozen times for one very important reason:
