Pretty well-made low budget sci-fi film about three teenage boys who have a strange encounter of the fourth kind and develop telekinesis as a result. The movie takes the time to set up the story and the characters and I think it works hard to keep these characters consistent even as their lives are completely changed. The acting is good, especially Dane DeHaan as the bullied and abused main character/chronicler who from the very start is NOT a good choice of teenage boy to receive special abilities. The story goes more or less where you think it will go but I don't think it suffers from being somewhat predictable, it still manages to find some good character moments and the effects are great for a budget of $12 million. I downloaded this after seeing the hullabaloo over how bad the new Fantastic Four was, and director Josh Trank's reaction to it, and I do have to wonder considering how thoughtful and well-paced this film was, what his vision for F4 was exactly. I guess we'll never know but perhaps it they had let him do his thing it could have been something as interesting as Chronicle is.
