Watching this movie, in hindsight, after there have been three Iron Man movies, two Captain America movies, two Avenger movies, two Thor movies, and Ant-Man and a Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty funny. Mostly because you actually can see a lot of set-dressing at work, like the time they take to establish SHIELD as a presence and the theme of Tony's inability to contain himself or his decisions drawing enemies like moths to a flame. Also, his need to constantly innovate and build bigger and better, which is definitely going to come back and bite him in the ass in later stories. When I saw this the first time I really had no awareness of Iron Man (or most of the Marvel universe outside of X-Men) and this was a great introduction. Re-watching it, it feels like more than an introduction to just Iron Man (although that is obviously its primary objective) and it's actually, I must admit, very impressive what they've managed to achieve with their storytelling and effects since then. And that's not for nothing, since the effects in this one still look great and RDJ is fantastic as Stark, the role he was born to play. Good writing, great cast, the first of many intriguing after-credits clips is pretty mild but still intriguing with Samuel L. Jackson offering a hint of the universe we're stepping into, and a baller soundtrack. This one is still pretty good.
Not at all subtle product placement.
