This is the kind of costume drama that puts costume dramas like The Duchess or The Other Boleyn Girl to shame. It's well-shot and well-written, with good dramatic pacing, great costumes, but its also actually sexy and it moves slow enough to let the story build and interest you but quickly enough that you're not bored to tears or confused by the intricacies. Plus it's a pretty interesting story, beyond the romance, about the birth of Denmark's political shifting from monarchy to democracy and humanism. Good film.
Also, MADS MIKKELSEN. He will always be the actor in that terrible King Arthur movie (with Clive Owen and Kiera Knightley) who is secretly the most attractive actor in the movie. But he is also great in this, and obviously in Hannibal (as are most people who work with Bryan Fuller!). More Mads for everyone!
